This project is an excellent example of how the private sector can act as a spur to improve the living standards of the poor. A range of services are provided including upgrading of existing slum areas, new build on a serviced lot, training in construction methods and affordable credit. The community is actively involved, building their own homes at 45 per cent of normal cost. An inter-institutional system has been established which enables the channeling of public and private resources and encourages participation in all sectors. The involvement of women and the use of traditional materials and building techniques are key elements of the programme.
