Innovative land tenure model to promote communal ownership of land. Tanzania-Bondeni was an informal settlement of 530 temporary structures. After surveys were carried out community decisions were made on how to reallocate land to provide space for infrastructure provision and improved access. Once tenure was established residents carried out improvements to their own homes, with the assistance of technical advisers and block-making equipment. Infrastructure improvements are carried out at the community’s own cost. Funding is shared between local and central government, donor agency, community and other partners. Loans provided for house construction and land came from central government.
