The Swansea Foyer provides accommodation, support and training for 30 – 35 young unemployed people in a building which seeks to avoid the typical institutional features of a hierarchy of corridors, stairs and lobbies. The energy-efficient, environmentally-friendly building is a converted listed building. A new interior has been configured to create an indoor street with individual houses to be occupied by 4 – 5 people. The project was designed in continuous consultation with young peoples’ groups and, as with all foyers, it encourages young people to move on to permanent jobs and accommodation and does not seek to provide long-term accommodation.
