This project is part of a government initiated slum clearance programme in Oued Zem. The slums are linked into the city’s infrastructure through improved road construction and sewerage connection. A total area of 57 ha has been covered, benefiting 5,388 households – some 41 per cent of the town’s population. Funding comes from a range of sources including government and the beneficiaries. Technical training is provided to beneficiaries during the self-build process and small businesses have been established as a result of the experience gained. The local community has been mobilised to help take responsibility for the ongoing maintenance of the programme.
