Habitat for Humanity International was established in 1976 to assist the poor and homeless, both in the United States and worldwide. A range of programmes have been completed and it is estimated to have assisted over 100,000 families. Innovative housing schemes on a non-profit, no-interest basis were started, making homes affordable to those on low-incomes. Self-build and community build were introduced and revolving funds were established to help others. The work was later extended to overseas, using funds raised in the USA. 40,000 families have been helped in the USA in 1,200 cities and in forty countries around the world.
