A comprehensive approach to the eradication of substandard housing in the city of Taza, Morocco. In this six-year programme, 23,500 low-income households were re-housed in seven integrated housing developments. Housing lots for sale provided a further 9,100 residential units. Households build their own dwellings and receive technical advice and support in so doing. Diverse social strata have been kept throughout, preventing any social or spatial segregation. The cost was $1,600,000, 25 per cent of which was met by the households who were re-housed. The rehabilitation of the ancient city centre is underway and studies are being carried out on how to preserve its role and physical structure.
