Completed in 1996, this project in Dagor, Denmark, initiates a new construction system for low-cost housing which provides safe, simple and functional living arrangements for the elderly. 34 flats are arranged in two two-storey wings which are connected by a community house via covered footbridges. Small flats appear larger through the clever use of glass walls and sliding doors. The primary structure is of steel with timber and light weight materials used for the secondary structure. At $800/m2, housing is low-cost for Danish standards. Prospective residents were included in the design process. Although primarily for the elderly, the project also houses younger people to ensure a more diverse social mix.
