This project involves the restoration and reconstruction of dilapidated houses in the Neighbourhood 37 District of Suzhou whilst maintaining historical and traditional architectural styles. Private-sector funding has been used to carry out the renovation. All ancient trees have been protected and the number of small shops has increased from 50 to 200, creating 400 additional jobs and increased tax revenues. The local community has been involved throughout the reconstruction of the neighbourhood and continues to be involved in the management through the Residents’ Committee.
