An easily adapted programme to upgrade vernacular building systems using local materials and local skills and involving the local community. 49 houses were completed in August 1997, over a six month period, 46 of which had attached toilets, built using concrete blocks, compressed earth and mud mortar. Micro-concrete roofing tiles were used for each building. Through community involvement, a centre was established for the women of the village who produce fibre-based handicrafts. It has progressed to a cooperative organisation and the standard of both the workmanship and materials of the local masons has greatly improved.
