BSHF submitted evidence to a Consultation by the Department for Communities and Local Government in December 2010. This Consultation sought views on the implementation of the New Homes Bonus.

The evidence from BSHF focused on the likely impact of the New Homes Bonus on empty properties and accomodation for Gypsies and Travellers.

  • BSHF supports the proposal to reward local authorities for bringing empty properties back into use. Empty properties are an important asset that could be used more effectively for the benefit of people in housing need, landlords and local communities.
  • BSHF supports the proposal to include Gypsy and Traveller pitches within the New Homes Bonus. This was for two reasons: there is a chronic undersupply of accommodation for Gypsies and Travellers and this shortage has a social and economic cost.
