World Habitat have provided emergency support of £5,000 each to partner organisations – members of our European End Street Homelessness Campaign – who are supporting some of the 3.5 million Ukrainian refugees who are fleeing into Eastern Europe.

Oz Stopa – our campaign lead organisation in Bratislava, Slovakia – are providing temporary accommodation for refugees passing through Slovakia and securing permanent properties for refugees who plan to stay longer. They collect people and families from the Ukraine border and bring them into Bratislava, helping them find accommodation and food – and even, if possible, work and schools for the children.

Pavol Sabela said:

“We know that we are not able to help everybody who run away from war zone, but we try to help as much as we can. We saw a lot of people lost on the streets with kids and we need to [find] them and support them. We must prevent this situation. If not, homelessness will radically grow.”

In Budapest, Hungary, our lead campaign partners Utcáról Lakásba! Egyesület/From Streets to Homes Association are also supporting refugees – by connecting people, especially families, in temporary arrival shelters with accommodation they can use for several weeks or months.  They help to find suitable, empty flats, and then transport people to them, help to cover the costs, provide furniture, as well as offering advice and personal support.

Dora Papadopulosz, said:

“In addition to our core activities, after the outbreak of the war, we began organizing the Solidarity Housing Program to help refugees from Ukraine in the longer term, where we connect home-owners with refugee families. We also help with organization, donations and social work.”

David Ireland, Chief Executive of World Habitat, said:

“World Habitat’s partners in countries bordering Ukraine are responding to the refugee crisis caused by the Russian invasion. Homelessness organisations have the ability to respond quickly providing care, emergency accommodation and safe housing for the most vulnerable refugees fleeing the violence. World Habitat has provided emergency support to our partners and stands ready to provide more help to assist refugees.”

Both organisations are accepting donations, for more information please visit:
