The Pelgromhof, a large-scale housing project that incorporates a wide range of innovative features relating to the design management, social and environmental condition, consists of 215 dwellings including 169 apartments and a sheltered housing block for 46 persons. It is designed for persons in the 50+ age group and seeks to enhance social integration through such facilities as a theatre, library, restaurant plus various meeting rooms. It has won a government competition to identify a National Model for Sustainable and Energy-efficient Buildings. Each prospective individual resident is encouraged to choose their own internal layout through using a life-size model which is housed in a nearby sports hall. This project is highly adaptable and state of the art in social, architectural and communications innovation.
