Co-operation between government, a Spanish NGO and community self-help has brought about this attractive and successful project for squatter families in Asunción. The families were selected from the poorest of the poor and were given training in order to allow them to participate fully in the project. The project consists of 254 attractive low-rise single family houses in a well designed and laid out settlement. It is now being replicated throughout the municipality with a further 1,000 dwellings being built under a similar scheme. The total cost was $940,000 with a $700 construction cost per house. A revolving fund has been established with the repayments so that similar projects can be established.
