Manara Sub-Projects provide 3,320 residential plots on 106 hectares of land. All dwellings were built at the occupiers’ own expense using local contractors under HUDC supervision. Minimum acceptable standards of shelter and infrastructure were provided leaving scope for refinement, expansion and replicability. Each project created job opportunities by providing commercial plots, workshops, core shops, community centres and vocational training centres. The initiative also sought to improve the low level of female participation in the labour force through the provision of specialised and locally-sited female training facilities.
