The Servivienda approach to housing provision uses a light pre-fabrication construction technology, together with sustainable social and financial programmes, which enables housing provision to be used as a means to foster community and educational development. The approach is easily adapted to meet varying needs and has been successfully transferred to other Latin American countries. Its 4,756 dwellings (January 2000) have been provided for very low-income houses as part of the dissemination process. The technology transfer is funded by Selavip at a cost of £16 per dwelling. The process fosters international collaboration, as well as enabling the beneficiaries to live in better conditions.
