The Crystal Waters Permaculture Village in Australia has carried out important pioneering work in demonstrating new ways of low-impact sustainable living through the establishment of the world’s first intentional permaculture village. As of 1996, two hundred people were living in the village on 83 privately-owned one-acre plots, arranged in small clusters. The project is entirely self-funded. Those living at Crystal Waters aim to live in balance with nature and thus seek to ensure that the houses and infrastructure they build are designed and used in accordance with ecological principles.
