Initiated under the National Better Cities Program and designed to promote improvements in the efficiency, equity and sustainability of Australian cities, the project concentrates on redevelopment of six dilapidated housing blocks creating ecologically sustainable urban developments through three distinct phases: public housing, private housing and commercial activity. The local community is actively involved at each level. Importance is placed upon the use of environmentally-friendly systems and particular attention is given to water conservation in view of the anticipated future problems of Australia’s water supply.
