This consultation sets out to consider how, or indeed whether, it is possible to provide adequate and civilised shelter for the world’s growing population in a sustainable manner, compatible with the ecological and social integrity of the planet.
This report provides a summary of the discussions at a Consultation held at St Georges House in Windsor Castle to consider whether it is possible to provide adequate and civilised shelter for the worlds growing population in a sustainable manner, compatible with the ecological and social integrity of the planet. Twenty-seven people with a wide range of expertise and experience were brought together for two days and developed an Agenda for Action that dealt with the following issues:
- How to minimise the environmental impact of existing settlements and dwellings.
- Moral and ecological viewpoints on responsible living.
- Obstacles to a more sustainable future and how to overcome them.
- Mega-cities and the Habitat II Global Plan for Action.
The report includes sections on sustainability and human settlements, mega-cities and their future impact and perspectives on an ecological future. It also sets out in detail how to achieve the recommendations included in the Agenda for Action.
