The UN’s Special Rapporteur on housing is currently focusing on the connections between homelessness and housing rights. In preparing their report to the Human Rights Council, the Special Rapporteur has requested responses to a range of questions.

World Habitat has a unique perspective on housing issues such as homelessness.  Through the World Habitat Awards (WHA) we identify effective solutions to a range of housing problems across the globe, and transfer this learning to different regions.  Our work on homelessness is a good example of this. We are taking learning from past WHA winners, and developing initiatives that transfer and adapt that learning to new contexts.  Our initiative to develop a European-wide movement to tackle street homelessness draws on the work of past WHA winners the 100,000 Homes Campaign and the Y-Foundation.

Using this knowledge our submission to the Special Rapporteur promotes a number of rights-based approaches to address homelessness.  We highlight the importance of broad-based movements, which are led by NGOs and civil society and supported by governments.

Our submission is available to download here and the consultation document is available for download here.
