In 1976 Peter Elderfield founded BSHF as an independent charity concerned with identifying innovative and successful solutions to housing problems worldwide.  This year we are celebrating our 40 year anniversary in a number of ways.

Our publication, “There is no shortage of housing problems – what is needed are solutions”, has been produced to mark our 40th year.  Previous World Habitat Awards winners talk about the impact winning had on their project and we take a look at our current programmes – Community-led Housing and Homelessness.

Our World Habitat Awards winners and finalists are showcased on our website.  We are currently contacting these inspiring projects to find out about their progress since entering so that we can share their progress with others.  An online form is available to help us capture this information – if your project has been involved in the World Habitat Awards we would love to hear from you.

This month we also attend Habitat III, the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development in Quito, Ecuador.  This is a great opportunity for us to exhibit all our World Habitat Awards winners and we are looking forward to learning about new ideas and housing practices from around the world.

You can read the full story of the first 40 years of BSHF in the ‘Our history’ section of our website and find out more about our founder, Peter Elderfield.
