Taihe Old Town is a place shaped by centuries of history, culture and everyday life. Over time, however, the neighbourhood fell into decline. Many traditional wooden buildings became unsafe and expensive to maintain. As residents moved out in search of safer housing, so the deterioration and depopulation increased.

The project, led by the Architectural Design & Research Institute of Tsinghua University (THAD), set out to reverse this. Instead of replacing the old town with new construction, the focus was on careful repair, reuse and protection of historic streets and buildings. Traditional architecture was restored using modern techniques to improve safety, comfort and public services, while keeping traditional features and heritage intact.

Local residents and shopkeepers played a central role throughout the process. Led by THAD, a community committee helped guide planning decisions, ensuring the project reflected local needs and traditions. This approach helped rebuild trust and encouraged people to return to live and work in the old town.

Today, Taihe Old Town is once again lively. Homes have been refurbished, shops reopened and public spaces improved. The area has become a cultural tourist destination, supporting local businesses, traditional skills and new livelihoods.

The renovation shows how historic neighbourhoods can be renewed without losing their identity. By combining heritage protection, community participation and long-term economic activity, the renovation of Taihe Old Town offers a practical model that can inspire similar projects elsewhere.
