This programme has trained over 115 masons drawn from local communities in the construction of vaulted earth brick houses using an ancient Nubian technique adapted and simplified for the rural Sahel region of Africa. Further support helps them to become independent entrepreneurs, developing their own clients and creating income generating opportunities in a region where few exist.

The houses offer significant improvements in safety, thermal comfort and affordability and increasing demand is seeing a self-sustaining market develop, with over 235 homes and 20 public buildings built to date.

The programme is currently training 170 apprentice masons and has expanded from its origins in Burkina Faso with trained masons now working in Mali, Senegal, Togo, Ivory Coast and Guinea.
